A woman teacher and her sister were brutally assaulted by a mob allegedly led by local Trinamool Congress leader in West Bengal’s South Dinajpur district. The assault that took place on February 2nd came to light after the video of the assault went viral on the social media. Latest reports say that a primary school teacher in her late 20s was protesting against some local thugs encroaching her family land. In the video, the woman teacher was tied up with a rope, dragged and beaten up on road by a group of people. The attackers were allegedly led local Trinamool Congress leader Amal Sarkar.
According to an NDTV report, Sarkar has been suspended by Trinamool district chief Arpita Ghosh. While ordering Sarkar’s suspension, Trinamool Congress district chief Arpita Ghosh also added that, “one should not stop development work.” The victims have been identified as Smriti Kana Das and sister Soma Das. Though no official statement has been made so far by the BJP, some reports suggest that the two women were saffron party supporters. So far, no one has been arrested for the assault. “We have received a complaint and investigation is on,” Purnendu Kumar Kundu, inspector-in-charge of Gangarampur police station was quoted as saying.

In her police complaint, the 29-year-old primary school teacher said that, “They (assaulters) tried to hit me on my head with an iron road. I somehow managed to dodge the attack. When I fell down they tied my legs with a rope and dragged me for nearly 30 feet. I was beaten up, my modesty was outraged and I was threatened.”
Trinamool Congress president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not issued any statement over the issue. The Dinajpur incident yet again highlights poor state of women safety in the country. The recently-released NCRB data shows disturbing, upward trend of crime against women.

As many as 3,59,849 cases of crime against women were registered across the country in 2017, continuing the upward trend for the third consecutive year, the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released on Monday showed. In 2015, 3,29,243 cases of crimes against women were registered and 3,38,954 cases were registered in 2016. The cases categorised as crimes against women include murder, rape, dowry death, suicide abetment, acid attack, cruelty against women and kidnapping, etc.
