Folk artist from Chhattisgarh Teejan Bai, President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh - who extended support for rescuing Indians from war hit Yemen, L&T chairman A M Naik and theatre actor from Maharashtra Balwant Moreshwar Purandare have been chosen for the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan.
This year the President has approved conferment of 112 Padma Awards including one duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). The list comprises four Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri Awards.
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Kariya Munda, late journalist Kuldeep Nayyar, Malayalam actor Mohan Lal, S Nambi Narayanan, former CAG V.K. Shunglu mountaineering personality Bechandri Pal, and BJP MP Hukum Dev Narayan Yadav for Padma Bhushan awardees.
Late actor Kadar Khan, cricketer Gautam Gambhir, dancer, and choreographer Prabhu Deva and former diplomat S Jaishankar are among 94 persons named for Padma Shree. Sikh riot activist H.S. Phoolka, former Akali Dal minister S.S. Dhinsha, author Gita Mehta, who is also the sister of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, former Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, actors Manoj Bajpayee, Prabhu Deva, Kader Khan - who died on December 31 last year after prolonged illness in Canada, singer Shankar Mahadevan, cricketer Gautam Gambhir, football player Sunil Chhetri, eminent surgeon Sandeep Guleria have been picked.
As many as 21 of the awardees are women and the list also include 11 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 3 posthumous awardees, and one transgender person.
These awards are conferred by President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.
