  • Heavy rains and floods have triggered a series of landslides in the state.
  • Death count in rain-related incident rises to 125.

New Delhi:

Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the Centre's contribution to the relief and rehabilitation operations in the flood-ravaged Kerala. Several parts of the southern state have been reeling under floods and landslides due to incessant rainfall for the last few months.

"After your (Modi) visit to Guruvayur - a huge flood visited Kerala, causing death and destruction. A timely visit then would have been appreciated," the Gandhi scion tweeted, addressing Prime Minister Modi. "Kerala is suffering and still awaits a relief package, like those given to other flood hit states. This is unfair," the former Congress chief added.

Gandhi was replying to one of the tweets by PMO India, quoting PM Modi's speech at Manorama News Conclave this morning. During his address, the prime minister said one of the first things he did after resuming office for the second term in May was visiting the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala.

Earlier on Thursday, on the third day of his visit to Wayanad, Gandhi demanded fast and quick compensation and relocation from PM Modi and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He said he had been assured that the needful would be done.

The Congress MP said he could not help but salute the spirit of people, especially children, of Wayanad, which has been hit by devastating floods. "I love Kerala, but when people say God's own country, they should think of Wayanad," Gandhi stated.

Gandhi assured the people of his constituency that he would raise their problems in Parliament and said the issues faced by farmers in the region had been raised by him in the Lower House. The Congress leader also met flood-affected people at Aaram Mayil in Pozhithana panchayat.
