Three Army jawans went missing on Monday after an avalanche hit a post along the Line of Control in South Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Initial reports suggest the avalanche had hit Mani Post in Bagtor Gurez sector.

It was reported that a 28-year-old Army porter was feared dead in the incident. The porter was identified as Ghulam Mohammad Khan. The avalanche was triggered by fresh snowfall and rains in Tulail. The jawan was returning from a forward post in Gurez sector.

The state police have launched a search operation has been launched. Further details awaited.

Three soldiers had died in April in Batalik sector when the avalanche hit their post. While two soldiers succumbed to their injuries, the body of the third soldier was recovered later.

Earlier in January, fourteen soldiers died in twin avalanches that hit an Army camp and a patrol party in Gurez sector. Located around 150 km from Srinagar, Gurez is a valley nestled among high mountains in Bandipore district. It is connected to rest of Kashmir by a road link that passes at an altitude of over 11,000 feet.
