The much talked about Triple Talaq Bill is set to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Friday after the Union Cabinet gave its nod to an amendment to the bill on Thursday. The Cabinet proposed three changes in the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill, 2017 – only the victim, a relation by marriage or a blood relation are allowed to file FIR in the case, the case can be dismissed if the wife and husband mutually agree to settle their disputes, and the magistrate can grant bail to the guilty party, but the offence is still non-bailable.
However, if the amended bill is given the nod in the Rajya Sabha, then it will be sent back to the lower house, i.e the Lok Sabha for approval.
On 29 December, the lower house passed the bill to make instant triple talaq, a criminal offense, just a day after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government proposed it in the Lok Sabha.
The Bill proposes a three-year term for men who is found guilty of divorcing his wife by spoken words, written or by means such as SMS, WhatsApp or email.
