The Narendra Modi-led NDA government has formed a ministerial committee to suggest ways to put an end to the practice of instant triple talaq in the Muslim community. The government is thinking in terms of amending the existing penal provisions or bringing in a new legislation to put an end to this practice. The government, sources told PTI, may rush in the new legislation in the forthcoming winter session of Parliament.
The Central government's plans comes in the wake of August 22 Supreme Court judgment that set aside the practice of talaq-e-biddat or instant talaq among Muslims.
Even after the apex court’s order there have been reports of a number of divorces by way of 'talaq-e-biddat'. Government functionaries added the practice is still being followed because of lack of awareness and the absence of deterrent punishment.
