National level netball player Shumaila Javed was in for a shock as her husband uttered the word ‘talaq’ thrice on phone as he divorced her following the birth of a girl child. Shumaila hails from Amroha district of UP and has been a national level champion for seven times.
She was married to Azam Abbasi, a resident of Lucknow’s Gosaiganj area in 2014. Shumaila has alleged that her in-laws used to consistently harass her for dowry and she was even left stranded after giving birth to a girl. Moreover, she has said that she did not get any assistance from police or administration.
The national-level champion has now sought help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding the matter.
Shumaila however is in no mood to bow down to injustice and has written a letter to PM Modi and CM Yogi. ” I urge the Prime Minister to help me in this grave situation.

He should set an example for all such people, who divorce their wives through triple talaq,” she said. Earlier this week, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had called for an end to the practice of triple talaq and invoked the disrobing of Draupadi in the Mahabharata to emphasise his point. PM Modi too in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ had termed triple talaq as a ‘bad social practice’.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, however, claims that Sharia law upholds the validity of Triple Talaq and allows a Muslim husband to divorce his wife by merely pronouncing 'talaq' three times. It added that the pleas challenging such practices among Muslims were not maintainable as the issues fell outside the realm of judiciary.
