A CMO official on Monday clarified that Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb was born in India and not in Bangladesh, contrary to repeated edits on his Wikipedia profile page. Deb was born on November 25, 1971 at Jamjuri in Gomati district of Tripura, he said.
"We have observed that since August 2, some erroneous facts were incorporated on the profile page of the chief minister. It was a mischievous attempt," Sanjoy Mishra, the media advisor to the chief minister, told PTI.

There were a number of edits on the Wikipedia page between August 2 and August 4, through which Deb's birthplace was continuously changed, he said.
According to the citizenship certificate of Deb's father Hirudhan Deb, he is a citizen of the country since June 27, 1967.
The certificate, which was made available to the media, showed that Hirudhan Deb was a resident of Jamjuri and his occupation was cultivation.
Mishra said the government believed in the freedom of the mainstream as well as social media as these were the fourth estate of democracy.

"But we (Tripura government) want that the social media platforms adopt a self-regulatory mechanism to stop such malicious activities. We have also observed that there were several attempts on the social media to malign his (chief minister's) image, which is not desirable," he added.
