UIDAI to roll out new service for updating Aadhaar card address easily

New Delhi:

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the top body behind issuing Aadhaar cards, is set to start a new service in 2019 that will help the citizens update their address in an easier way. The new service is set to go live from 1 April, 2019, said a report by leading news agency PTI.

"Residents who are not having acceptable proof of address may submit their request for address verification through Aadhaar letter having a secret code. Once the letter is received by the resident, he/she can use the secret code to update his/her address in Aadhaar on the SSUP online portal," the UIDAI said in a notification on Tuesday, PTI reported.

The new facility will aid people who are staying in rented places and face difficulties in furnishing address proofs of their temporary address.

Due to the fact that such people change their rented houses frequently, they face hardships in updating Aadhaar card and availing services from it.

Under the upcoming service, a person will be able to verify his address through a secret code sent in a letter by UIDAI to his present residential place.

The secret code will be similar to those issued by banks for activating credit and debit cards.

"UIDAI is expected to run a pilot before starting the new service. The pilot project will be initiated from January 1, 2019 and the facility would be functional from April 1," a UIDAI official told PTI.

Under the present rule, if a person wants to update the address then it is mandatory to provide any one of 35 documents consisting of passport, voter ID, bank passbook, driving license, marriage certificate, registered rent agreement, etc.
