Only 50 days back, a 20-year-old woman had thrashed her boyfriend with slippers at a market-place in Jharkhand’s Maoist-infested West Singhbhum district after learning that her friend was planning to do away their 2-year-old relationship with the hope to live a happy married life.

But, the young woman had never thought that the marriage blessed by police officials would come to an end due to the social evil — dowry.

A 20-year-old woman was allegedly torched to death by her in-laws for failing to bring dowry said the victim’s brother.

The victim has been identified as Sunita Pradhan.

West Singhbhum police told the media that Sunita was admitted to Tata Main Hospital with more than 90% burn injuries on August 2. She died during medical treatment on Thursday night.

Police said that they have arrested two people including the victim’s husband Dhaneshwar.

“We had received information regarding a girl thrashing a boy in the market. On intervening we learnt that the girl wanted to marry the accused but he had other plans. After counseling the duo tied knots at the temple within the police campus,” added the official.

According to National Crime Record Bureau data in the last three years 24771 dowry deaths have been reported.
