Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who on Wednesday was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI), said unless someone was going to be hanged today or evicted out of his house, no other matter can be mentioned for urgent hearing.
"No urgent mentioning of cases will be allowed" till certain "parameters" are fixed for it, the new Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said. "We will work out the parameters then we will see as to how mentioning will be done... If somebody is going to be hanged tomorrow, then we can understand (urgency)," Chief Justice Gogoi was quoted as saying.
"We are trying to evolve a system to produce better results reducing time between filling and listing of cases on board. A new system for preventing cases from being dropped from the list is also on agenda," the CJI added.

CJI Gogoi was addressing the Supreme Court Bar Association with some plain-speaking over urgent mentioning of cases in the apex court for hearing. He also issued a new roster hours of the Supreme Court in which he and Justice Madan B Lokur are scheduled to hear the Public Interest Litigations.
Gogoi, 63, is the first from the Northeast state Assam to become the CJI and will have a tenure of over 13 months. He will demit office on November 17, 2019.
Early in the day, President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to Justice Gogoi at a brief ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan's historic Darbar Hall. Gogoi took the oath in English in the name of God.
Several leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his predecessor Manmohan Singh and former premier HD Deve Gowda, were present at the ceremony.
Post that, Justice Gogoi came to the Supreme Court and presided over the bench along with Justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph in Court number 1.

The new CJI began the day at the Supreme Court by telling the lawyers that fresh parameters would be worked out for mentioning the matters for hearing those cases which required hearing on priority and urgent mentioning.
Born on November 18, 1954, Justice Gogoi, who belongs to Dibrugarh in Assam, enrolled as an advocate in 1978. He practised in the Gauhati High Court on constitutional, taxation and company matters.
