A 50-year-old woman died due to starvation in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district on Wednesday, after her husband was denied ration from public distribution system (PDS).
According to the deceased’s husband, the woman had fallen sick a week back due to starvation and finally succumbed.
The deceased has been identified as Sakina, a resident of Bholenagar under Paschimi Fathehgunj police station jurisdiction.
Sakina’s husband said, “We did not have a single food grain from last several days. She fell ill as we had to skip are food. PDS denied giving me ration stating that they need my wife’s fingerprints.”
He added, “I told them my my wife is seriously ill and won’t be able to come and requested them to provide me ration but they denied. She died a painful death due to hunger.”
Yogi-government had made it mandatory for PDS to provide ration only after biometric confirmation.
In October, An 11-year-old girl in Jharkhand had died of starvation months after her family’s ration card was cancelled because it was not linked to their Aadhaar number.
