Raising serious questions on Uttar Pradesh’s health services, an accident victim was made to lie on a stretcher with his own severed leg placed under his head at Jhansi Medical College on Saturday.

The incident came to the light after a video showing the victim lying down on a stretcher with his severed leg placed like a pillow under his head went viral on social media.

UP government woke up after the video went viral and ordered a probe to find out who put the leg under the patient’s head.

State Medical Education Minister Ashutosh Tandon suspended emergency medical staff Dr Mahendra Pal Singh, senior resident Dr Alok Agarwal and two sisters on duty.

However, Dr Sadhna Kaushik, principal of the medical college, blamed the patient’s attendant for using the leg as a pillow.

“I have spoken to 30 people in the emergency (ward), no one saw any staffer doing it,” she said adding “patient’s attendant used the leg”.

The 28-year-old victim Ghanshyam was brought to the hospital in critical condition after his bus met with an accident in Mauranipur.

BJP ruled Uttar Pradesh is notorious for its poor state of health services. Earlier last year, over 30 children had died in Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College and Hospital after oxygen supply was disrupted over non-payment of dues.
