A survey of rural women in India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh was conducted recently which indicated that their rising ambitions and their desire to change lives.

The survey has revealed that 56 per cent want to work and 67 per cent want to study further. It included several other questions like whether they want to go to beauty parlour and whether they watch television. The data revealed that at least five per cent would like to go to a beauty parlour regularly whereas at least 10 per cent watch television only for news.

Apart from the above-asked questions, the rural women were also asked if they take permission from their husband or father before stepping out of their homes to which 67 per cent of them replied in ‘Yes’. Whereas another 15 per cent revealed that they could leave do so only if accompanied by someone.

The survey includes more shocking details. When asked a question about dowry which is banned across the country, 81 per cent said that their parents will have no other option except paying dowry at their wedding.

The survey was conducted with women aged between 15 and 45. The data was collected from 350 blocks out of 820. It took 25 days to conduct the whole survey. It was conducted by Ankita Tiwari of the Gaon Connection Insight Team.

"The main purpose of our study was to collect information on aspirations, freedom, and awareness levels regarding career choices, sanitation, and television viewing habits of rural women in Uttar Pradesh," IANS quoted Tiwari as saying.
