Uttarakhand Elections 2017: BSP fields widow of candidate who died before polls

BSP has fielded the widow of its Karnaprayag candidate Kuldeep Kumar Kaanwasi whose death in a road accident led to postponement of polling in the seat in Uttarakhand to March 9.

Karnaprayag seat election officer N Goswami said that Kumar’s wife Jyoti filed her nomination papers on Saturday.

The election on the Karnaprayag was postponed by the Election Commission after Kaanwasi died in a road mishap, three days before the state Assembly polls on February 15.

As per law, if candidates of recognised party die, it is countermanded and party is given time to field a new candidate and polling fixed for new date.

The Election Commission had then fixed March 9 as the date for polling and February 20 as the last date for filing of nomination of the new candidate.
