There is a visible change on roads in Uttar Pradesh which is used to the banner, flags and cut-out culture. The never-ending love in some people to flaunt political power through their vehicles has witnessed a tilt towards the ‘lotus’ from the ‘cycle’.
The massive mandate in favour of the BJP in the recently-held Uttar Pradesh assembly election has suddenly changed people’s choice of flags they use on their vehicles (especially SUVs) as a sign of authority.
The sight of high-end four-wheelers bearing the Samajwadi Party flags has started to fade on state roads. Now, the streets in UP are almost flooded with vehicles carrying BJP’s lotus symbol.
This has also triggered a spurt in the sale of BJP flags. Even the local party leaders are buying hundreds of them for party supporters in their respective areas. A shopkeeper in Lucknow said that he now sells at least 50 flags a day as compared to two or three.
Some young BJP workers also admit that putting a flag bearing the party symbol on their vehicle gives them a VIP-like feeling.
