Watch: At Sabarimala Temple, policemen turn protesters, vandalise vehicles

New Delhi :

The opening of Sabarimala Temple gates on Wednesday was marred by violent protests over the entry of women of all age groups. The protesters stopped vehicles carrying women between the earlier banned age of 10-50 and attacked journalists covering the fulminations.

While devotees faced the wrath of hooliganism by some, the policemen deployed around the shrine to provide security to visitors also turned protesters and vandalised vehicles parked near the hilly road leading to the Lord Ayyappa Temple. In a video shared by news agency ANI, police personnel carrying batons were seen vandalising motorcycles parked in Pampa.

Earlier in the day, protests against the entry of women of all age groups in Sabarimala Temple turned violent. Hordes of activists of Hindu fringe groups took to the street and besieged the road leading to the temple.

The protesters heckled women journalists and activists, smashed their vehicles and young female devotees of Lord Ayyappa were turned back as police deployed there failed to maintain the law and order.
