New Delhi:

Sonam Wangchuk came into spotlight in 2009 when his character was portrayed by Aamir Khan as Phunsukh Wangdu in the blockbuster hit film ‘3 Idiots’. The engineer-turned-educationist has spent his years in engineering an educational and cultural movement in Ladakh. His efforts have led to a massive drop in failure rates of school students.

On November 15, 2016, Wangchuk won a Rolex Award for Enterprise and became the only second Indian to win the honour.

Every year, Rolex supports individuals for innovative ideas to make the world a better place. Wangchuk came up with a path-breaking invention of the Ice Stupas, “tall towers or little mountains” of ice, in order to solve water scarcity problems in a cold desert.
