In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld the decision of Delhi High Court in 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case and sentenced 4 culprits to capital punishment.
The four accused - Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh had filed a petition in the apex court challenging HC verdict of death penalty.
The three-judge bench, which gave the decision, was headed by Justice Dipak Misra and comprised of Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan.
After the verdict, Nirbhaya's mother expressed satisfaction with the apex court's decision. According to sources, the verdict was welcomed with applause by those present in the courtroom.
Meanwhile, the defence lawyerAP Singh termed the verdict against human rights, "We cannot give capital punishment to set an example in the society, it is a defeat of human rights. Justice not done, we will file review petition after reading the order."
The Government has increased the security of Tihar Jail where the four culprits are serving their sentence to avoid any untoward incident after the verdict.

Justice Dipak Kumar is considered highly sensitive towards women-related issues. In the past, he upheld rape as depravity and not curable and recently, passed a woman-friendly judgement saying that "no woman can be compelled to love; she always has right to say no."
Six people gang-raped the 23-year-old Nirbhaya in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. Later, she succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Singapore.
Ram Singh, the main accused in this case had already committed in suicide by hanging himself in the prison. The sixth accused, who was a juvenile had been ordered by the court to serve three years in a reform house.

Nirbhaya's parent sure that SC will award death sentence
Earlier in the day, Nirbhaya's mother said that she has full faith in the judiciary and is sure that the apex court, through its ruling, will give justice to her daughter.
"We have full faith in the judicial system and I am sure that the Supreme Court will announce death sentence in its verdict for the guilty. I am sure the Supreme Court will give justice to my daughter. This will set an example for the world," Nirbhaya's mother said.
Nirbhaya's father also said that he is sure of the fact that the apex court will award death sentence to the convicts.
"They will be awarded death sentence. Leave Supreme Court, even God will not forgive such people," said Nirbhaya's father.
