India has one of the longest coastlines and it thereby becomes imperative to safeguard the territorial integrity of our coast and defend any maritime aggression from the enemy state.

While the Indian Navy thwarts any aggression of the enemy in the High seas, the coast guard plays a pivotal role in ensuring our coastline remains 

In recent times, India witnessed a lot of terror attacks through the sea route. The gruesome 26/ 11 attack was perhaps the most telling one of them. Ajmal Kasab and perpetrators of the barbaric attack came through the Arabian sea and spelled havoc in the financial capital of India.

The incident was indeed a wake-up call for the coast guards, and they have responded in equal measures and in quick time. After the incident. the manpower has increased tenfold and they are now equipped with the state of art weaponry.

The Coast Guards are vigilant all through the day and night to check any possible enemy attacks from the sea route. In addition to their core duties, the coast guards keep a high vigilance against pirates operating along the Indian territorial waters.

Off late, the Chinese Navy has increased its presence significantly in the Bay of Bengal area and raised alarms with its aggressive intentions of occupying strategic ports in the Indian subcontinent.

Hence the coast guards have become more alert to fend off any underwater threat from the Chinese submarines. The Indian and Japanese Coast Guards conducted a joint military exercise to improvise on its maritime tactics and drills.

As many as nine ships and eight aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard along with Japanese Coast Guard Ship ‘Tsugaru’ with helo (helicopter pad on the deck of a ship) participated in the biennial Search and Rescue Exercise 2018.

The Indian Coast Guard’s ICG Sarang, Sagar, Shaurya, Vaibhav, Anagh, Rani Abbakka, Abheek, C-431, C-432 and three Dornier and Chetak helicopters took part in the exercise in the Bay of Bengal.
