The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution to rename the state "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi.

The Assembly had earlier dropped "Bongo" as one of the proposed name for the state during discussion last year, reported a news agency.

Earlier this month, the cabinet had decided to drop “West” so that it does not come last alphabetically among the others in the country, officials said.

The ruling Trinamool Congress party in the state had wanted to rename West Bengal to "Paschimbanga" in 2011, "to raise the state’s position alphabetically".

Besides TMC, Opposition parties led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had also supported the move then.
