West Bengal to be named 'Bangla'; State Assembly passes resolution

West Bengal State Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to change the name of West Bengal to ‘Bangla’.

The resolution passed in the Assembly will now be moved to the Home Ministry.

If Home Ministry gives a green signal to the resolution then only the name will be changed to ‘Bangla’.

Earlier, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had sent back the plans to change the name of West Bengal to ‘Bengal’ in English, ‘Bangal’ in Hindi and ‘Bangla’ in Bengali.

"We are bringing in an amendment to the original bill to change the name of the state of West Bengal to Bangla in all languages after the Centre raised objections to have different names of the state in different languages. The new proposal will be placed before the Assembly during the next session," Partha Chatterjee, state education and parliamentary affairs minister had said on July 18.

But following Delhi’s stance with three names, the state cabinet passed a resolution to change the name to ‘Bangla’ in all languages on 8 September 2017.

Now, the proposal has been passed in the State Assembly and now the Centre's decision is awaited.
