On a day when the national capital is on high alert and the entire city has been turned into a fortress seeing security threats ahead and during Republic Day celebrations and ASEAN summit, two bike-borne criminals opened fire at a school bus of a noted institution on Thursday morning and kidnapped a class 1 student.
The development was confirmed by Delhi joint commissioner of police (eastern range) Ravindra Singh Yadav. The incident took place around 8 am.
“We have lodged an FIR and special teams have been formed to nab the criminals and rescue the student safe and sound,” said Yadav.
The joint commissioner added that no ransom calls have yet been made by the kidnappers.
According to eyewitnesses of the incident, the two criminals were wearing helmets. “The two forced the bus to stop. When the bus driver resisted one of the two opened fire at the bus,” said an eyewitness to the police.
Police suspect a person known to the family could be involved in the kidnapping as they were aware of the child’s routine.
