With eye on 2019 polls, PM Modi to address famers’ rally in Midnapur today

With an eye on 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will once again challenge West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee in her bastion by addressing a farmers rally in Midnapur on Monday.

"It is going to be a historic gathering. Modi ji's impending visit has created a lot of excitement and enthusiasm among party activists and leaders here," news agency IANS quoted BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha as saying.

This would be the Prime Minister’s first visit to West Bengal in 2018. Modi’s visit shows that the BJP will give more importance to spread its footprints in the state ahead of 2019 general elections.

Since 2014 elections, the BJP has been trying to make inroads in the state. To some extent, the saffron party has even been successful and emerged as the main Opposition parties after the recent panchayat polls.

The party is eying big victory in Bengal in 2019 general elections. Recently, Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah during his visit to Purulia had claimed that he had would win more than 22 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal.
