Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who returned India after a short trip to his Nani’s home in Italy, on Monday accused the BJP of showing utter disregard for the mandate of the people.
Rahul Gandhi in his tweet said, "With just 2 seats, the BJP has usurped power in Meghalaya, through a proxy. Like in Manipur and Goa, showing utter disregard for the mandate of the people. Obsessed instead with grabbing power, using big money to create an opportunistic alliance.â€
Congress had emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya on Saturday, but the BJP, who won only two seats, somehow managed to bring together regional parties and staked claim to form the government.

The similar situation had emerged in Goa and Manipur last year where Congress emerged the single largest party but failed to form the government.
Learning lesion from Manipur and Goa, Congress fled senior leaders to Meghalaya soon after trends predicted fractured mandate.
However, the promptness didn’t work in Congress’s favour and BJP once again snatched the chance to form a government from the Grand Old Party’s hands.
According to the now familiar script, BJP ally NPP’s President Conrad Sangma with 19 seats is set to become the Chief Minister of the state with support from United Democratic Party (UDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF), and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).
