Kerala New Year Christmas Bumper Lottery: The results of the Kerala New Year Christmas Bumper were released online at keralalotteries.com, the official portal of the state lotteries. Perunnon Rajan, a daily wage worker in Kerala, won the first prize of Rs 12 crore in Christmas Bumper held on February 10. The winner would get an amount around Rs 7.2 crore after tax deduction.
Rajan, a resident of Puralimala Kaithachal Kurichya Colony at Tholambra in Kerala’s Maloor, runs his family by doing odd jobs.
The ticket prize for Kerala Christmas bumper was Rs 200 and despite financial constraints Rajan used to purchase lottery tickets with a hope that his fortune will get a turn one day, reported TOI.
Along with the first prize of Rs 12 crore, the lottery also carries a second prize of Rs 50 lakh and a third prize of Rs 10 lakh. Moreover, the Kerala state government also conducts festival jackpots on the occasion of Onam, Vishu, and Dussehra.
It was in 1967 when the government of Kerala, in order to give a major boost to revenue generation, set up a lottery department. The idea is said to have been the brainchild of the then Finance Minister of Kerala, late PK Kunju. This became a source of non-tax revenue for the state while it also provided a source of stable income to the poor.
