The protest against Citizenship Act turned violent in Mangalore on Thursday after police fired tear gas at the crowd and resorted to aerial firing after some incidents of stone pelting. In view of the protests and violence, curfew was declared in central sub division of Mangaluru under five police station limits. According to local media, police said more than 20 cops were injured in the clashes.
The protest, which kicked off despite prohibitory orders in place, took an ugly turn, when protesters donning helmets started hurling stones at policemen. Some vehicles were also damaged. Police had to lathicharge while several activists were taken into custody. The police had to open fire in the air to disperse the crowd.
Curfew has been imposed in Bunder, Kadri, Urwa, Pandeshwar, and Barke police station areas. Section 144 has been imposed till December 21 midnight in the city while quick reaction teams have been deployed.
