New Delhi:

Chanel has announced that their high-end fashion line will stop using fur and other exotic animal skins. Following the massive pressure from animal rights campaigners, the fashion-line said in a statement that they want to maintain the ethical standards and unspoken rights of the animals that have no voice for themselves. This announcement now makes Chanel the first luxury fashion house in the world to stop using exotic animal skins such as snake, crocodile, lizard and stingray.

A spokeswoman of the renowned French fashion house told CNN that the decision was taken partly because it is not possible to obtain such products which meet the company's principles. She said: "At Chanel, we are continually reviewing our supply chains to ensure they meet our expectations of integrity and traceability. In this context, it is our experience that it is becoming increasingly difficult to source exotic skins which match our ethical standards."

Chanel’s head creative designer, Karl Lagerfeld, who assumed the role 12 years after the death of the company’s founder, Coco Chanel, while speaking to Women’s Wear Daily had more to say about the decision, he said We did it because it's in the air, but it's not an air people imposed to us,".

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) known to fight staunchly against high-end fashion line and its use of animal products welcomed the brand’s decision as a victory. The non-profit organisation for animals took to Instagram to celebrate the victory. They posted, "2018 is THE YEAR for designers coming out of the stone age".

In 2016, Italian brand Giorgio Armani announced that his brands would end their use of fur which was followed by Gucci. Gucci had also announced that their brand will no longer use mink, racoon, fox or any other animal that was bred or caught for its fur in its designs.
