Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters crowned Miss Universe 2017

Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned Miss Universe 2017 at a glittering ceremony being held in Las Vegas, US on Sunday.

On the other hand, India's Shraddha Shashidhar failed to make a mark at the world's biggest beauty pageant, though the entire country had its hopes pinned on the model. She could not even make it to top 16.

The country was hoping for a double win after Haryana girl Manushi Chhillar bagged the coveted Miss World 2017 crown on November 18.

Nel-Peters, the 22-year-old beauty was crowned by her predecessor Iris Mittenaere of France.

Colombia' Laura Gonzalez and Jamaica's Davina Bennett were announced as first runner-up and second runner-up respectively at Miss Universe 2017 event.

In the Q&A section, Nel-Peters was asked, "What quality in yourself are you most proud of and how will you apply that quality to your time as Miss Universe?"

She responded by saying, "As Miss Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual. And Miss Universe is a woman that has overcome many fears and by that, she is able to help other women to overcome their fears."

"She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for and I think that is exactly who I am," she added.

Apart from the three, the contestants who made it to the top ten were from USA, Venezuela, Philippines, Canada, Spain, Brazil, and Thailand. Miss Venezuela and Miss Thailand made it to the top five at the pageant.

The announcement of the winner was also made on Miss Universe's official Twitter account.

The event was hosted by comedian Steve Harvey and overall 92 contestants had participated in the pageant where they were divided by geographic region for the first time.
