Last year the world rejoiced when Victoria’s Secret announced that Winnie Harlow, a model with vitiligo will be the first to walk the famous lingerie runway with the condition. With the topic of ‘inclusivity’ brought open to the masses, the lingerie brand faced severe backlash for its lack of ‘inclusivity’ once again when the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Ed Razek, made the comment that transsexuals should not be made in the show which he later apologised. Follwing the furore, Victoria’s Secret on Sunday bend their reportedly rigid rules by announcing Valentina Sampaio as their first ever openly transgender model that will tread the runway.
While Victoria’s Secret slowly loosens their rigidity with inclusivity, there have been models much before Valentina Sampai or Winnie Harlow who recently became the highlight of ‘diversity’ that have been making the modelling industry be human. Be it for their rare genetics, unconventional body types, or certain facial features, here is a look at some of the most unique models around the world that are defining ‘different’ as beautiful:
Madeline Stuart: With over thousands social media fans, Stuart is a proud model with Down Syndrome making history by becoming the first-ever model with the condition to walk the New York Fashion in 2015.
Casey Legler: A model that is very vocal about not being chained down by societal definition of ‘gender’, this androgynous model standing proud at ‘6"2 with an athletic build, her androgynous looks is fashion's first "female male model."
