When it comes to air pollution, Delhi needs no reminding. According to the data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi stood at 324 which is beyond hazardous. The World Health Organization estimated that 7 million people die yearly as a result of air pollution placing people living in the metropolitan cities at a higher risk. It has in fact become a global phenomenon which is giving rise to many endangering health issues.

Researchers, however, showed that foods which are rich in vitamin C, and Vitamin E can help clean your system, particularly your airways, as these foods are rich in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory qualities.
Here are some foods that you should include in your diet to fight air-pollution:
- Avocado: A research showed that vitamin E which is richly found in avocados can reduce the effects of air pollution on the lungs. The study also noted that people with decreased levels of vitamin E were more vulnerable to lung conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. As such, they concluded that food such as avocado and spinach which are high in vitamin E can help counteract the effects of air pollution.
- Flaxseeds: Phytoestrogens, abundantly found in flaxseeds are known to have high anti-oxidant properties that can help reduce illnesses such as asthma and other air pollution allergic reactions. Flax-seed also contains omega 3 fatty acids which can prevent heart diseases. Add flaxseed into your smoothies, salads, baked foods for a healthy diet.
- Olive oil: Olive oil is rich in vitamin E that contains alpha-tocopherol, a property that can improve the lung function. The fatty acids found in olive oil have also been proven to reduce inflammation. Replace cooking oil with olive oil or adding it in salads can help you reap health benefits.
- Tomatoes: Munching on tomatoes at this time of the year might not be a bad idea. Since tomatoes contain lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant, it can help fight against repository illnesses caused by air pollution.
- White wine: Wine lovers rejoice! Studies have shown that since wine have high levels of antioxidants, drinking white wine can result in a better respiratory and cardiac health.
