Diwali tempts you into succumbing to the delicious looking mithai, crispy namkeens and other calorie-rich sweets. And they can be bad news for people with diabetic and calorie-struggling issues. But there is also some good news because being diabetic does not mean that you have to give up on sweets entirely.
There are other alternative ways of eating healthy such as limiting your food portion intakes, replace sugar with natural sweeteners such as dates.

Here are some sugar-free options you can try at home for your Diwali celebrations.
- Sandesh: A Bengali dish made with sweetened cottage cheese flavoured with cardamom and kesar, Sandesh is the perfect low sugar treat for you this Diwali. Replace the sugar with jaggery and you have the diabetic-friendly, Diwali treat.
- Ragi Malpua: A pancake that can go oil-less, this Indian pancake dessert uses ragi flour, atta and oats to give you a healthy Diwali experience. Malpuas are usually made deep fried you can also go oil-free, use a non-sticky pan to fry the pancakes and get rid of the oil that you dread.
- Black jamun ice-cream: Black jamun contains ‘jamboline' which is considered to be a godsent for diabetics. You can now indulge your sweet-tooth with a slurping, rich and creamy Black Jamun Ice-cream. For this ice-cream, use low-fat milk sweetened with sugar substitute and thickened with cornflour instead of fattening cream. You wouldn’t know the difference plus they taste equally delicious.
- Whole wheat orange cake: Cakes make for excellent desserts but this whole wheat orange cake also makes a diabetic-friendly dessert too. A cake that makes the whole room like an orange garden, this cake is made with whole wheat flour and low-fat dairy products, which is suitable for diabetics. Curds and butter are used to achieve the soft and succulent texture. However, for the diabetic friendly cake, use the orange rind alone, without any orange juice or essence. The rind will give your cake the perfect orange taste without making the dish sour and increasing the need for sugar. Serve warm!
