New Delhi:

Beer is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. Yet, many a times, this refreshing drink often lead to developing a big belly among many consumers. In fact, beer is also known as the ‘belly beer”. Beer is made from grain, such as barley, wheat or rye, which is then fermented with yeast. They are high in carbs and alcohol but low in almost all other nutrients. Drinking beer hence cause excess calorie consumption, while preventing your body from burning fat and increasing the phytoestrogen content of your diet

Four facts behind the big bear belly:

  1. Drinking beer increases your calorie intake: Beer contains calories as much as any other soft drink. Which means that consumption of beer can add more calories to you diet. Drinking beer goes two ways- you either end up consuming more food which is more than the calorie your body requires or in other case, you eat less food and drink more which also leads to an increase in calorie. Hence, drinking beer risks in the increase of calorie-intake altogether.
  2. Beer might increase in body fat: Regular beer drinking can contribute to an increase in body fat. This is because your body prioritizes the breakdown of alcohol over other sources of fuel, including stored fat. The studies on drinking beer and weight gain remains inconclusive. Many concluded that moderate drinking does not increase in belly fat but over drinking does. Nevertheless, drinking beer regularly could lead to a significant weight over time.
  3. Beer causes bloating: Since beer is made out of grains it has high content of carbs. Hence, drinking beer often leads to an unrealized sensitivity to gluten causing an inflammatory response that leads to large fluctuations in weight or, at the very least, intense bloating. In addition, since beer is usually consumed because of the presumably lesser alcohol content you drink more of it to feel a buzz than you would from other alcohol. Hence, you end up consuming more calories.
  4. Your body reacts differently to alcohol: Your body does not respond to alcohol like it does with other macronutrients. It treats alcohol like a foreign substance. It hence, pause on the protein synthesis and the allocation of other macros to rest while the body burns off all stored alcohol stores. In the end, all the food you eat while you drink, will sit in your gut while your body burns off the alcohol.

Drinking beer hence contribute to excess calories, less energy, more fatigue and hunger. Over consumption is essentially a recipe for over consumption and weight gain.
