Binge drinking may lead to brain damage in teens

New Delhi:

All the teenagers out there, you need to read this. Binge drinking can not only cause damage to your liver and physical but can prove to be detrimental for your brain.

According to a new study, binge drinking may lead to altering brain activity, an indicator of delayed brain development, in teenagers and adolescents. It is also an early sign of potential brain damage.

The study was published in Journal Frontiers in Behavioural Neuroscience.

It has been discovered that adolescents brains, which are at the developing stages, may be more vulnerable to the damaging effects of alcohol abuse when compared to adults.

The researchers undertook the study by examining the electrical activity in different brain regions of college students. The teens who were heavy drinkers were found to have altered brain activity when at rest.

The research also indicated that teens who were binge drinkers had higher measurements of specific electrophysiological parameters, which are known as beta and theta oscillations.

Researchers have stated that the changes may indicate a reduced ability to respond to an external stimulus.  This may also create potential difficulties in the capacity to process the information in teen binge drinkers.

Some of the early signs of brain damage due to alcohol could be indicated by these changes.
