Doctors remove massive hair lump from 16-year-old girl's stomach in Dehradun

A massive lump of hair has been removed from the stomach of a 16-year-old girl in Dehradun. The lump was the size of a melon.

According to a report in Daily Mail, Akanaksha Kumari had a strange addiction of eating her hair and she had been doing this for the past several years. This addiction of eating hair made her unable to eat anything and even caused her to throw out frequently.

Her parents realised that something was wrong with their daughter after her weight started to fell drastically.

The lump of the hair had occupied 80 per cent space of her stomach and that made her to lose interest in eating, according to the reports.

Rapunzel syndrome is a rare condition in which a hairball which is also called a trichobezar is there in the stomach and its tail is in the colon. The girl has been diagnosed with the syndrome.

Gastro surgeon Dr Abhay Kumar and his team conducted an open surgery on the girl at Doon Mediacal College and Hospital, in Dehradun.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Kumar said, "The hairball occupied 250 ml to 300 ml of space in the stomach. And this was causing her to lose interest in eating. The surgery was challenging because we had to extract the hairball in one go."

The girl is recovering and doing much better after surgery.
