Domestic violence increases risk of death in Indian women: Study

New Delhi:

A latest study led by a group of researchers from the University of Washington has found that Indian women are at more higher risk of death in comparison to their peers in the US after being assaulted within the home, typically by husband or partner.

Domestic violence is said to be 40 times more dengerous for Indian women than women in other countries all over the world.

The study includes that three major causes of injury are falls, road traffic accidents and domestic violence and Indian men were more likely to die after going through any one of the three categories of injury than either Indian women or US men and women.

Moreover, evidence proved that only one in four female victims of assault in India actively seeks care after experiencing intimate partner violence.

Talking about the latest findings, published in the online journal BMJ Global Health, Mohini Dasari, researcher at the University of Washington has said, "The higher odds of death for Indian females compared with US females suggest that there are other injury and systemic factors that contribute to this discrepancy in mortality odds."

While Indian group of scientists conducted the study on patients from four hospitals in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi, the US group included patients treated at level 1 trauma centres in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
