Dandruff trouble affects almost all and those disgusting flakes can ruin your perfect look in that pretty black dress. It is a scalp condition caused by a fungus-Malassezia, which feeds on sebum (the oil secreted by the sebaceous glands on our scalp) and the dead skin cells which occur naturally due to formation of new skin. Although this microbe is a normal part of the scalp, but it often turns problematic- the fungus feeds on sebum, breaking it down into fatty acids. An itchy scalp and flakiness are the hallmark signs of this condition, but it may also cause other symptoms like greasy patches on the scalp and tingling skin. Here's a list of top home remedies for dandruff that are effective and long-lasting.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV helps in treating itchy, dry skin and also helps to kill dandruff-causing fungus and bacteria. The acidic content of vinegar is supremely beneficial to drastically reduce flaking. Dilute an equal quantity of ACV with water and apply on the scalp about half an hour before you head for a wash.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda works by reducing the overactive fungi that are responsible for dandruff. Mix baking soda and water in a bowl and apply the paste to your scalp. Leave it as it is for about 10 minutes. Wash your hair with normal water.
3. Coconut Oil
Since Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids, including lauric acid and capric acid, it has strong antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. These properties help target and kill the fungus and any viruses or bacteria that may exist.
4. Tea Tree Oil
All anti-acne and anti-fungal medications boast of tea tree oil due to its exceptional power to fight fungal and bacterial infections. Add a drop or two of tea tree oil to your shampoo and wash normally and notice the results sitting in the comfort of your home!
5. Aspirin
Aspirin contains salicylates that exfoliate the scalp and help treat dandruff. You will need to crush the aspirin tablets and add the powder to a bowl. Mix a little amount of your regular shampoo with the powder. Shampoo as usual using this mixture. Leave the shampoo on your hair for two minutes, after which you can rinse with water.
6. Mouthwash
To treat a bad case of dandruff, wash your hair with your regular shampoo, then rinse with an alcohol-based mouthwash. Follow with your regular conditioner. Mouthwash has anti-fungal properties that help prevent dandruff-causing yeast from growing.
