Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), commonly known as Monkey fever has claimed the life of one Saturday night. Wayanad district is reportedly on high alert 10 suspected cases of monkey fever have been reported, with five of them being confirmed having monkey fever. In the first monkey fever death reports of its kind since 2015, the disease took the life of one Sundaran, 27, a resident of the Begur tribal hamlet who died while undergoing treatment for the same at Kozhikode Medical College tested positive and succumbed to monkey fever on Saturday night. 

He was first admitted to the Mananthavady district hospital on March after reporting that he had symptoms of the monkey fever disease after which he was transferred to the medical college.

‘’ The deceased had gone for work in a timber yard near Begur where monkey deaths were reported recently. It is not confirmed whether he contacted the disease from there. We have collected samples from the ticks collected from the area to find out the source of infection,” said Wayanad district medical officer R Renuka as per TOI.

- High fever

- Frontal headaches

- Haemorrhagic symptoms, such as bleeding from the nasal cavity, throat, and gums, as well as gastrointestinal bleeding

Secondary symptoms

- Vomiting,

- Muscle stiffness,

- Tremors,

- Absent reflexes,

- Mental disturbances
