The world is bracing hard to get away with the scourge of Zika Virus, a disease that has created fears in the minds of many pregnant women. The virus cause mild disease but turn deadly when they infect pregnant women and their unborn baby. Let us take a look at other deadliest infections to watch out for are:
The virus causes mild fever, rash, pink eye and joint pain in one in five people. However, its major threat is to pregnant women who are having babies born with small heads and brain damage.
According to reports, the virus can cross from the infected mother to the baby through the placenta. The risk to pregnant women is highest during the first trimester thus forcing countries to advise their pregnant women against travel to affected countries.
Rubella (German measles)
The disease is highly contagious and spreads through cough and sneezes. If a pregnant woman develops congenital rubella syndrome then there is no treatment for her child.
Group B Strep
The Group B strep bacteria affects only pregnant women and newborns; it affects them and kill newborns.
The virus can create hearing loss in newborns and babies who get infected in the womb. There’s no cure for CMV, but drugs can help treat newborns and people with weak immune systems.
This bacteria, which occurs from contaminated food, such as unpasturised milk and cheese, cold cuts, and undercooked or raw meats and fish, can cause mild symptoms of fatigue and aches but can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or severe infection in newborns.
