New Delhi:

27 contact lenses have been found stucked in the eye of a 67-year-old lady while they were preparing for a cataract surgery.

The lenses were causing discomfort to the woman and resembled a ‘blueish mass’. The woman was under the illusion that the discomfort was due to dry eye and old age.

It is the case of November, 2016 but it has just been reported in the British Medical Journal, told

"None of us have ever seen this before. It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient did not notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there," Rupal Morjaria, a specialist trainee ophthalmologist who dealt with the case at Solihull Hospital near Birmingham, said.

Earlier, 17 lenses were discovered by the eye-specialists and then further examination revealed that 10 more lenses were stuck in the eye.

The patient told that she had been wearing disposable contact lenses for a period of 35 years but failed to attend regular appointments.

The patient told that she was unaware that the lenses were missing.

According to the findings, the patient had her operation because the risk of developing endophthalmitis, which is the inflammation of the interior of the eye, had increased.

No symptoms were reported by the patient before the surgery.
