To raise awareness regarding the deadly disease that claims the lives of millions every year, World Cancer Day is observed every year on 4th Feb so that people can discuss, encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. As such, we arrive at the topic of food and the kinds of food may trigger the deadly disease without us even knowing. Because as much as food that contains anthocyanin, sulforaphane, antioxidants among many other properties are known to fight the disease, there are an equal amount of unhealthy food that maybe triggering the deadly virus, upping the risk of cancer.

Processed meats: Seen as a time-saver, processed meat such as hot dogs, bacon, ham, sausages, and bacon contain certain chemicals such as sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate and carcinogens. A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer.

Hydrogenated oils: Commonly used in many foods to preserve and maintain their shelf life, hydrogenated oils have also been linked to cancer, birth defects, heart disease and many other fatalities.

Pickled or highly salted foods: Another preserved food that is in the list of cancer-causing food are highly salted food such as fish, pickled vegetables. This is because highly-slated foods are processed with the preservative nitrate, which has been classified as probably carcinogenic (cancer causing) to humans.

Microwaved Popcorn: Microwaving food in general has never been considered healthy, and microwave popcorn is no different. The bags of microwaved popcorn are lined with chemicals that are linked to causing not only infertility but also liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) distinguishes the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in microwave popcorn bag linings as “likely” carcinogenic, and several independent studies have linked the chemical to cause tumors.

Farmed fish-salmon: Containing rich antioxidant, astaxanthin, healthy fats, salmon are one of the healthiest foods there is. The same however, cannot be said for farmed salmons because farm-raised fish are fed unnatural diets and contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides and other known carcinogens found in materials like asbestos.
