New Delhi:

World Parkinson's Disease Day marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson and in the whole month of April efforts are made to increase the public awareness of this disease.

Dr. Parkinson first described the disease in “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy”, published 200 years ago in 1817. In 1876 French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot renamed it Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. Nearly one million people in the US are living with Parkinson's disease. The cause is unknown, and although there is presently no cure, there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage its symptoms.

The number of countries that participate in this expand every year, include Uruguay, Mexico, Bolivia, Fulvio Captinio, the USA, and the count is increasing with every passing year.

The aim is to raise global awareness of Parkinson's disease, promoting a greater understanding of this condition and how it can affect a person. This day is dedicated to support those groups and organizations that are intent on eradicating or controlling this illness and also provides an opportunity to raise funds for management, research projects, and resources.
