Younger mothers more likely to resort to heavy drinking: Study

All expecting women out there, you need to read this carefully. Heavy drinking during and after pregnancy could turn out to be detrimental for you.

Despite knowing the fact that alcohol consumption during pregnancy is not at all good, many pregnant women continue to overlook the impact of the same.

The new study published in Journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, has stated that young mothers are more likely to indulge in alcohol consumption.

A study on maternal alcohol has been conducted and it is the first one which empathises on age at a transition to motherhood involving risky drinking during a span of 17 years.

The research showed that people generally tend to adjust their behaviours across life-spans as they adapt to new roles be it marriage or parenting, which doesn't match to their previous behaviours.

For women, the transition to parenthood is particularly relevant and it leads to a reduction in the consumption of alcohol.

The research was conducted on 456 pregnant women across the age of 13 to 42 years, at an urban prenatal clinic. The women were asked about their alcohol consumption during the pregnancy, at delivery, and at six, 10, 14 and 16 years postpartum.

Most of the mothers (66 percent) were found out to have low-risk trajectories of alcohol consumption during the 17-year span.

However, it was also revealed that younger mothers were more likely to indulge in risk drinking during their early stages of pregnancy. This continued and went for six to 14 years postpartum.
