For the nearing ‘festival of colours’, Holi, Surf Excel released an advertisement to connect the dots between the Hindu-Muslim differences as they featured two kids from two different religion, a Muslim boy and Hindu girl, riding a cycle as the song ‘Rang Laaye Sang’ played on in the one-minute ad. This concept in communal harmony has left the netizens divided at both extremes. While some Twitterati are hugely appreciative of the message behind the ad, the other side of the viewers saw it in a different light even letting to the #BoycottSurfExcel trend as they saw the ad as promoting, what netzines thinks is ‘love Jehad’.
The one-minute advertisement which ends with Surf Excel’s classic tagline, 'daag acche hain’ and the Agar kuch achha karne mein daag lag jaaye toh daag achhe hain’ was released on February 27 and has already managed to garner around 8,583,942 views and 26k thumbs-up on YouTube.
This advertisement by Hindustan Unilever has left netizens vastly divided and they made sure that their opinions are heard as they took their own ‘stand’ on Twitter. While many users saw the ad as a great step to unite communal differences with comments such as, ‘’I am buying 2 extra 2 kilo pack of #SurfExcel for reminding us that we are nice people. And live naturally in relative harmony’’ and this, ‘’This beautiful Ad has angered Sanghis and they want to Boycott #SurfExcel. There are some things Surf Excel can’t clean. The Filthy Mind of Indian RW is one of them’’ many netizens expressed the ‘urgency’ to boycott the advertisement.
