After years of rolling to have a period emojis on our phones by the UK girls’ rights group Plan International, the emoji will soon be finalized. The awakening came about when a social media by the name of #PeriodEmoji was campaigned by the group that finally reached the ears of the people.
“The inclusion of an emoji which can express what 800 million women around the world are experiencing every month is a huge step towards normalising periods and smashing the stigma which surrounds them,†Head of Girls Rights at Plan International, Lucy Russell, said.
“For years we’ve obsessively silenced and euphemised periods. As experts in girls’ rights, we know that this has a negative impact on girls; girls feel embarrassed to talk about their periods, they’re missing out, and they can suffer health implications as a consequence.â€
“An emoji isn’t going to solve this, but it can help change the conversation. Ending the shame around periods begins with talking about it.â€

Unicode, the California group who manage emojis, has confirmed the ‘bloody’ great addition to the group of emojis and is reported to come as early as March 2019.
While this emoji is seen as an ice-breaker regarding the taboo surrounding menstruation with about 47 per cent of women believing that they can now talk openly about periods, some see this addition as a complete ‘unnecessary’ and have even called it ‘disgusting’. Twitter is in fact, filled with hilarious, clueless man, who have no idea about how and when they should be using the emoji while some women have surprisingly expressed disgust for the emoji.Â

Can we like not refer to this as a period emoji please. It’s pointless and unnecessary.
I don’t think I have ever once had a conversation where I have considered needing a ‘period’ emoji. pic.twitter.com/VCKnYXcHmK— kc | wfh (@enlightdjh) February 6, 2019
