Chhath Puja is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated by Hindus across the northern part of the country, especially in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. This day is celebrated to honour Lord Surya (Sun) and Chhathi Maiya, who is known as Lord Surya's sister. As per the Hindu calendar, Chhath Puja is celebrated on the sixth day of the month of Karthika during the Vikram Samvat. This year, it will be celebrated from October 31 till the morning of November 3. Chhath Puja is mainly observed by women folks for the well-being of children and the happiness of the family.

What is Chhath Puja?

Chhath Puja is dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun) and Chhathi Maiya. It is celebrated on the sixth day of Karthik month of Hindu calendar. The festival commences with the setting sun and concludes with the rising sun. Devotees visit nearby ghats and offer sweets, water and fruits to the Sun god.

When is Chhath Puja 2019?

The Chhath Puja is a four day long festival and this year it will begin from 31st October, 2019 with 'Nahai-Khai' ritual. On 1 November, 2019, the devotees will observe Kharna. On this day, the fasters keep nirjal upwas for the whole day and eat Kheer made of rice or jaggery rice as Prasad in the evening. On 2 November, Sandhya Arghya vidhi is performed by the devotees. On the fourth and the last day of Chhath Puja, Usha Arghya vidhi is been performed on Kartik Shukla Saptami. The devotees visit the riverbank early in the morning (before sunrise) and after sunrise, the fasters offer arghya and pray to Chhath mata.

Why Is Chhath Puja Celebrated?

Chhath Puja is mainly celebrated in the North by the married women. It is believed that Chhath Puja is performed in order to have a boy while some say that Chhath Puja is commenced for well-being, development and prosperity, of both human beings and the planet.
