According to the traditional belief, Mahabali was disliked by the gods despite his kindness. They sought Lord Vishnu’s help to slay the demon King. Although, Mahabali was an ardent Vishnu devotee, the Almighty agreed to help them in order to slay the King.
Vishnu took the mythical ‘Vaaman’ (dwarf) avatar and asked the king for three wishes. Mahabali could not say ‘no’ to a Brahmin and agreed to grant him the three wishes, without realising the truth. The Vaaman avatar grew in size and covered everything that belonged to Mahabali in two steps. But Mahabali, who was man of words, requested the Lord to put third step on his head. The Lord thus sent the King to hellfire ultimately removing him from throne. However, Lord Vishnu was impressed by the devotion of the demon King and gave him the boon to return to his land every year.
Therefore, Onam is considered as a festival marking the homecoming of the one who lost his land. We wish the readers of News Nation a very Happy Onam. May this year bring good luck, prosperity, and a courage to rebuild your life on Panglossian pillars. Onam Ashamsakal!
