Maha Shivratri: Puja Items That Should Not Be Used For Shiva Abhisheka

Maha Shivaratri is one of the biggest festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to the traditional Hindu calendar, the festival is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi ((fourteenth day) of the Krishna Paksha every month. But the most important Shivaratri falls in the month of Phalgun and is also known as Maha Shivaratri.

Lord Shiva is the most revered Hindu God and one of the three main dieties of Hindusim. He is the fountainhead of yoga, meditation and spirituality. Shiva is the sanctuary for both kinds of devotees, the ones who seek wealth and worldly pleasures and the ones who seek liberation from miseries of the worlds.

This year, the auspicious festival of Shivratri will be celebrated on February 21 across the country. According to religious beliefs, Lord Shiva fulfils all his wishes by pleasing his devotees only by offering a lots of water to Lord Shiva on Mahashivaratri. Here are 7 things which should not be forgotten even during the worship of Lord Shiva. 

Conch water- Lord Shiva demolished a demon named Shankhchud. The conch is considered the symbol of the same asura who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Therefore Lord Vishnu is worshiped by the conch shell and not by Shiva.

Flower - In the worship of Lord Shiva, flowers of dupaharika, malati, champa, jasmine, juhi etc. should not be offered. Aakamda flowers, Dhatura flowers, blue lotus(or Pink Lotus/White Lotus) flowers are auspicious.

Kartal- Kartal that makes a pious noise during aarti at Hindu puja should not be played while worshiping Lord Shiva.

Tulsi Leaf - Tulsi was born from the part of Vrinda, wife of Asura named Jalandhar, which is accepted by Lord Vishnu as a wife. Therefore, Tulsi does not worship Shiva and hence should not used for Shivratri puja. Instead use Bael leaves. The BAEL leaves used in pooja should be of 3 leaflets even if one of the leaves gets detached of three leaves then it is of no use.

Broken rice- It is written in the scriptures about offering Akshat i.e. whole rice to Lord Shiva. Broken rice is incomplete and impure so it does not climb to Shiva.

Kumkum- It is a symbol of good luck, while Lord Shiva is recluse, therefore Kumkum is not be offered to Shiva. Also Read:

• Curd
• Milk/water
• Honey
• Tender Coconut water
• Vibhuti (holy ash)
• Panchamruta (Curd based delicacy consisting of Panch(5) items: Milk, Sugar, Ghee (clarified butter), Honey, curd)
• Bananas
• Sandalwood Paste
• Ghee (Clarified butter)
• Haldi
• Fragrant oils
