Ram Navmi falls on April 2 this year. Ram Navmi, which is celebrated on the 9th day of Chaitra month, symbolises the removal of evil and incarnation of divine power on the Earth. The day is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Ram, Lord Vishnu’s seventh incarnation. Ram was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya.
According to Hindu belief, the purpose of Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as Lord Ram was to slay demon king Ravan. Ravan, the king of Lanka, was regarded as the most intelligent administrator. He had been blessed by Lord Brahma, which made him invisible and indestructible. He misused his powers and put sages and saints into a situation of great misery. Ravan’s ruthless reign necessitated the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Lord Ram.
Ram was born in Treta Yug, the second of four yugas, or ages of mankind. He was an ideal son, an epitome of virtue and idol of chivalry. Ram, the prince of Ikshvaku race, was the lord of the mind and senses.
He along with his brother Lakshman got mastery over all weapons under the tutelage of great sage Viswamitra. He was well versed in all sciences ranging from military science to the science of the Self. Ram, the great warrior, is known as the defender of weak and protector of the righteous.
