The Quiet Space: The spell of a blade of grass

Striking the right chord in a poem and a song, the leaf of grass casts a spell on hearts that matter. (Picture for representation)

The slender, green blade of grass sways gently in the cool of the day, softly plucking the heart of a poet. Striking the right chord in a poem and a song, the leaf of grass casts a spell on hearts that matter. A blade of grass? Yes. What’s in a blade of grass one may ask. “I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of stars,” writes American poet Walt Whitman. Some may agree. Some may wonder, and some care less.

Well, while the ignorant fails to understand the grandeur of this God’s creation, it did cast a spell on millions of hearts. Just a leaf of grass. But, bending which way the wind blows, it has inspired and continues to inspire millions the world over.

The point is, to cut a long story short, how you see a thing and what you do with it puts life in perspective and can make a whole lot of difference.

As the leaf of grass grows green and tall and sways gracefully through day and night,  you may look at it with askance or not look at it at all and its existence to you may mean nothing. Or, you may pluck it and rope it off its existence or gather them in bundles as fodder for your cattle and make hay while it grows. Or, feel the beauty of it; capture it and etch it in your heart and mind forever.

Surely, a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars as Whitman believes. The single blade of grass that to many may appear good for nothing is a part of the beautiful green grass that holds the earth,  nature that shapes man and his life. It is an essence of life. A rich part of a rich man’s life.

Hence, how you see a leaf of grass is how you see a glass -  half empty or half full. And how you see a thing in life is how you see a blade of grass. It can, if you wish, touch your life. All you have to do is let the blade of grass cast its spell on you. But to experience it all, you must first see it - its beauty and elegance.

Truly, the thing that you may fail to see or deem it useless is, perhaps, a wonderful part of the good life you have. You got to let it cast its spell on you lest you miss out on the good and lose the blessings you have.
